Going to the gym isn’t always a walk in the park. Working out takes effort, and for some, the challenge is simply knowing what to do once they get there. Understanding the environment, the equipment, the exercises, and even the latest trends can be overwhelming. So, whether you’re a gym rookie or a seasoned gym-goer, here are five common mistakes you might want to fix for the benefit of both yourself and your fellow gym enthusiasts.

1. Relying Only on Machines
Machines are easy to use and can simplify many exercises, so there’s nothing inherently wrong with them. However, their simplicity comes with drawbacks. For starters, most machines are designed for people of average height, which can be a problem if you’re shorter or taller. Moreover, machines often guide your body through unnatural movement patterns, which can be uncomfortable.
On the other hand, free weights allow for more natural, fluid movement patterns and activate your stabilizer muscles, which machines don’t engage as much. While machines can still be useful, especially cable machines, incorporating free weights into your routine is essential for overall fitness.
2. Focusing Solely on Isolation Exercises
Are you that person staring at yourself in the mirror while doing your eighth set of bicep curls? Fitness is about more than just the size of your arms.
Isolation exercises, like curls and triceps pushdowns, target individual muscle groups. However, compound movements—such as squats, deadlifts, and shoulder presses—work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, helping you get more done in less time. If you want to build overall strength and muscle mass, compound movements should be your go-to. Isolation exercises are still valuable for specific volume targets, but don’t rely on them exclusively.

3. Using Very Light Weights
It’s understandable that beginners might be hesitant to lift heavy weights at first. But progressive overload—the gradual increase in weight or resistance—is a key principle in building strength and muscle. If you’re always lifting light weights, you’re not challenging your muscles enough to see meaningful growth.
Aim to lift weights that challenge you, where you can only manage 3-5 reps at a time. Gradually push your limits to build strength. Avoid sticking to high-rep, low-weight sets unless your goal is pure endurance.
4. Forgetting to Bring Water
A common but critical mistake is forgetting to bring a water bottle. Our bodies are about two-thirds water, and during an hour of exercise, we can lose up to a liter through sweat. Without replenishing that water, you risk dehydration, which can lead to muscle cramps, fatigue, poor focus, and headaches—things you definitely want to avoid during a workout.
Make it a habit to bring a water bottle with you. It’s better than relying on the gym’s water fountain. If you’re doing intense or long-duration exercises, you might want to consider a sports drink or coconut water to replace lost electrolytes. Just be mindful of the added sugars.

5. Not Asking for Help
Many gym-goers avoid asking for help due to pride or fear of appearing inexperienced. However, seeking assistance is crucial, especially for beginners. Studies show that people with social or coaching support are more likely to achieve their fitness goals. Having someone to guide you can help with motivation and accelerate your learning.
If you can’t afford a personal trainer, do some research online or ask experienced gym-goers for advice. Despite the stereotypes, most gym regulars are more than willing to lend a hand—they’ve been where you are and understand the challenges of starting out.
